Kim Ji Won will return to television as a genius freelance surgeon in SBS’s medical noir Doctor X, which is scheduled to premiere on October 9. The drama has released images from its first script reading, introducing an ensemble that includes Lee Jung Eun, Son Hyun Joo, Kim Woo Seok and a large supporting cast.

Adapted from the Japanese series of the same name, Doctor X follows Gye Soo Jung, a surgeon whose ability places her in direct conflict with a corrupt medical establishment. Rather than relying on status or institutional backing, she proves her value through surgical skill while entering the rigid hierarchy of Guseo University Hospital.

A dark hero defined by ability

Kim Ji Won’s Gye Soo Jung works through a doctor-for-hire agency and is dispatched to the hospital as an outsider. That employment structure gives her independence from the institution she is challenging. It also turns each operation into more than a medical case, because her performance threatens a system built around rank and established power.
