Yoo Hae Jin, Yim Si Wan, Kim So Hyun and Lee Moo Saeng Join Occult Film Modup

Yoo Hae Jin, Yim Si Wan, Kim So Hyun and Lee Moo Saeng have been confirmed to lead the new Korean occult mystery film Modup, a working literal title. Distributor Showbox announced the cast on September 1 and said production is scheduled to begin filming during the month.

Set in the 1960s, the film takes place on a remote island that has long been abandoned. Its story follows people whose lives become intertwined like a knot that cannot be untangled, combining an isolated period setting with unexplained illness, family conflict and supernatural mystery.

Yoo Hae Jin will play Lee Do, the chief of a fishing village. The character protects the community and keeps watch over the island, positioning him as both an authority figure and a guardian at the edge of the film’s central mystery.

The actor said the team would begin filming together in September as the weather starts to cool. He expressed hope that production would conclude safely and said he would work hard to help create a strong film. His comments echoed the project’s emphasis on a careful start to location work.

Yim Si Wan plays Lee Do’s son Sang Gun, a determined man who moves directly toward a goal once he has chosen it. Despite his father’s opposition, Sang Gun travels to the remote island after receiving a request from Seon Ok, the character played by Kim So Hyun.

The father-son disagreement creates an immediate source of tension. Lee Do’s role requires him to protect the village and monitor the island, while Sang Gun’s decision pushes him toward the place his father wants him to avoid. That conflict ties the family relationship directly to the mystery.

A search for treatment drives the story forward

Kim So Hyun takes on the role of Seon Ok, who heads to the island while searching for treatment for an illness with no known cause. Her request draws Sang Gun into the journey and brings both him and Lee Do into a series of unpredictable events.

The role marks Kim So Hyun’s return to the big screen after roughly 10 years. Her character appears to function as the catalyst connecting the strange symptoms to the island, while her pursuit of a cure gives the supernatural premise an urgent personal stake.

Lee Moo Saeng plays Seon Ok’s father, Gu Taek. Facing his daughter’s unexplained condition, he goes to the remote island as a final hope of saving her. The decision places another parent-child relationship alongside Lee Do and Sang Gun, giving the film two families with different reasons to confront the same location.

Together, the four announced roles establish a compact dramatic structure: a village chief guarding an island, a son who defies him, a sick woman searching for an answer and a father running out of options. Their motivations overlap before the full nature of the island’s danger has been revealed.

Park Jong Hyun makes his feature directing debut

Modup will be directed by Park Jong Hyun, who previously worked in directing departments on films including A Normal Family and Broker. The project will mark his directorial debut. Kang Yoon Sung, known for directing Big Bet and Low Life, is also participating in the production.

Park said he was excited to make his first film with the cast and staff, while emphasizing his hope that everyone would complete filming safely and without problems. His statement, together with Yoo Hae Jin’s comments, placed production safety at the forefront as the team prepares for the September shoot.

No release date has been announced. For now, the confirmed ensemble, 1960s island setting and occult-mystery framework offer the clearest outline of the project. With filming about to begin, Modup moves from casting news into production with four established actors anchoring its story of illness, isolation and entangled lives.
