Kang Seung Yoon Reportedly Eyes First TV Drama Role in Four Years

WINNER member Kang Seung Yoon may be preparing for a new television drama role, with Korean media reporting that the singer and actor has been cast in KBS2’s upcoming weekend series I Went to School, a working literal title.
The report, published on July 1, said Kang has been linked to the role of the son of Yoon Ok Hee, the drama’s central character. In response, both YG Entertainment and KBS gave cautious statements, saying they could not confirm the casting. That means the project should still be treated as unconfirmed from the agencies’ side, even as the report has drawn attention because it would mark Kang’s first regular television drama appearance in several years.
A Later-Life Campus Story
I Went to School is described as a weekend drama about Yoon Ok Hee, a mother who decides to enroll in college later in life. The premise follows her as she begins a new chapter and rethinks the direction of her future. The setup places the story in familiar family-drama territory while adding a campus backdrop, giving the series room to explore generational tension, personal reinvention, and the social expectations placed on mothers.
Lee Jung Eun is reportedly in talks to take the lead role of Yoon Ok Hee. The broader reported cast also includes Yu Jun Sang, Girls’ Generation member and actress Sooyoung, and Jeon Sung Woo. If those names are finalized, the series would bring together performers with established television profiles and a mix of family, comedy, and character-drama experience.
For Kang Seung Yoon, the reported role would place him inside a story built around family dynamics rather than idol-centered plotlines. Playing the son of the lead character could give him a supporting part close to the emotional center of the series, especially if the drama leans into the impact of Yoon Ok Hee’s decision on the people around her.
Why The Casting Report Drew Attention
Kang is best known globally as a member of WINNER, but he has maintained an acting career alongside music for well over a decade. He made his acting debut in the 2011 sitcom High Kick: Revenge of the Short Legged before later debuting with WINNER, and he has since appeared in projects including Prison Playbook, Kairos, and Voice 4.
His most recent acting project was the 2022 KBS Drama Special The Season of Undies. If his participation in I Went to School is confirmed, the new KBS2 drama would become his first television drama in roughly four years. That timing is a major reason the report is being watched closely by fans who have followed both sides of his career.
The project also carries interest because of its writer. Yang Hee Seung, whose previous credits include Crash Course in Romance, Oh My Ghost, Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo, and A Hundred Memories, is attached as the writer. Her track record suggests a series that could balance humor, heart, and accessible character conflicts, although the final tone will depend on the full cast, direction, and network scheduling.
What Is Confirmed So Far
At this stage, the key confirmed point is that a casting report has surfaced and the relevant sides have not verified it publicly. YG Entertainment and KBS both responded with brief non-confirmation, which is common in Korean entertainment reporting when discussions, schedules, or contracts have not been finalized for public announcement.
The drama is currently expected to premiere in the first half of next year, according to the report. Until KBS or the agencies issue formal casting notices, Kang Seung Yoon’s involvement should be described as reported rather than official. Still, the possibility of his return to a television drama has already made I Went to School one of the more closely watched casting developments among WINNER fans and K-drama viewers tracking KBS’s upcoming weekend slate.
