Two webtoon-based Korean dramas are turning familiar source material into some of the season’s biggest viewing stories. True Education and Mr. Kim have both posted striking records, reinforcing how webtoon intellectual property has become one of the most reliable engines for Korean television and streaming growth.

The trend is not new, but the scale is notable. According to a News1 report carried by Gyeongbuk Domin Ilbo, Netflix’s True Education has held the No. 1 spot on the platform’s non-English show chart for four consecutive weeks. By its fifth week, the series had reached 51.3 million views, calculated by dividing total viewing hours by runtime.

Two Hits, One Adaptation Wave

That performance reportedly pushed True Education past The Glory, which logged 39.7 million views, into fifth place among Netflix Korean original dramas by viewing count. The report also noted that the series is within range of All of Us Are Dead, which recorded 55.5 million views, suggesting the ranking could move again if its momentum continues.

On the broadcast side, SBS drama Mr. Kim has built its own ratings story in unusually fast fashion. The series began with a 9.5 percent nationwide rating, based on Nielsen Korea data cited in the report, then climbed to 21.6 percent by its fourth episode. Its sixth episode reached 22.3 percent, placing it among the strongest Friday-Saturday drama performances in SBS history.

The same report described Mr. Kim as the highest-rated drama across all Korean channels this year and noted that it crossed the 20 percent mark faster than most recent titles. Its appeal has also extended to streaming. Mr. Kim uses a similarly bold setup. Netflix’s Korean listing describes the lead character as an ordinary father whose daughter suddenly disappears, forcing him to bring back skills from a buried past as a special operative. Mr. Kim has also seen renewed attention around past controversy involving the original production lead Park Tae Joon, who previously denied intent related to those allegations.

Those disputes have not stopped the shows from performing, but they underline a recurring challenge for adaptation producers. Webtoon fandom can deliver early awareness and built-in interest, yet older source-material controversies can travel with a drama into a much larger global audience.
