The reports, based on a June 30 broadcast of JTBC’s Crime Chief, said a complainant claimed Jang’s mother used the singer’s name to encourage an investment and then failed to return the money as promised.

Jang’s side has firmly separated the singer from the allegation. According to reports from Star Today, iMBC, and JoyNews24, Jang conveyed through the JTBC program that she has had no direct contact with her mother for many years. The statement was presented as a warning meant to prevent additional victims from believing claims that the two are communicating or financially connected.

The case centers on a person identified in reports as a victim who said they became acquainted with Jang’s mother before being encouraged to invest tens of millions of won. The alleged pitch reportedly invoked popular trot programming, including Miss Trot or Mr. Trot, and suggested that an investment of around 20 million to 30 million won could lead to a much larger payout.

Several reports said the complainant ultimately transferred about 30 million won. When the promised repayment date arrived, the money allegedly did not come back. The complainant’s family then contacted police, and coverage of the JTBC segment said at least one other person had already filed a complaint over a similar method.

A key part of the allegation is the use of fabricated or misleading communication. Korean outlets reported that Jang’s mother allegedly claimed she had reconciled with her daughter and showed messages that appeared to suggest contact with the singer. JoyNews24 reported that two phones were allegedly used to make it look as though KakaoTalk messages had been exchanged with Jang.

Jang’s response was unusually direct because the allegation involves her name even though she is not accused of wrongdoing. Her side said she has not directly communicated with her mother for more than a decade and that past attempts to reach her through others were not accepted. The statement also emphasized that the current allegation is unrelated to Jang herself.

iMBC reported that the complainant filed a complaint in April and that police later notified the complainant’s side that the investigation had been suspended because the suspect’s whereabouts were unknown. JoyNews24 also reported that Jang’s mother was currently described as unlocated. The renewed coverage has put Jang’s difficult family history back in the spotlight.
