Actor Kwak Dong Yeon will enlist as an active-duty soldier on August 25 after a busy run of drama, streaming, and variety projects.

Kwak Dong Yeon will begin South Korea’s mandatory military service next month, setting a firm pause in a career that has recently gained renewed attention from domestic and international viewers. The actor is scheduled to enter the Army as an active-duty soldier on August 25, with his discharge expected in February 2028.
His agency, THEBLACKLABEL, said the enlistment will be handled quietly, without a separate public event at the training center. After completing basic military training, Kwak will be assigned to a unit and continue his duties as a soldier. The low-key approach follows a common request from agencies seeking to prevent crowding and disruption around enlistment sites.
A Quiet Enlistment After A Busy Screen Run
The timing gives the announcement particular weight because Kwak has been visible across several parts of the Korean entertainment landscape. Most recently, he made a special appearance in Netflix’s original series The East Palace, which premiered on July 17. In the dark fantasy historical drama, he played the Crown Prince, a figure tied to the mystery surrounding repeated deaths among royal heirs.
Although the role was not a long-running lead part, it placed Kwak inside a high-profile streaming project with a genre mix that can travel well beyond Korea: palace intrigue, folklore-inspired horror, and supernatural suspense. For actors approaching enlistment, a recent streaming appearance can also help keep their name active with viewers during the months before service begins.
Kwak’s military schedule is already affecting his entertainment commitments. He is not expected to join the second season of tvN’s variety show The Village Barber, where he previously appeared alongside Park Bo Gum and Lee Sang Yi. Go Kyung Pyo is set to take his place in the new season, marking one of the clearest immediate changes tied to the actor’s upcoming enlistment.
From Child Actor Roles To Global Drama Recognition
Kwak began acting in 2012 through the KBS2 drama My Husband Got a Family. He had originally trained as a singer, but his career soon moved firmly toward acting, where he built a reputation through supporting and scene-stealing roles rather than a single overnight breakout. That gradual rise has helped him become a familiar face across youth dramas, historical titles, crime stories, and romantic series.
One of his defining early roles came in the 2016 historical drama Love in the Moonlight, where he played Kim Byung Yeon. The project remains important to his public image, and before enlistment he is expected to reunite with fellow cast members Park Bo Gum, Kim Yoo Jung, Jinyoung, and Chae Soo Bin for a 10th anniversary special program celebrating the drama.
His later credits widened that profile. He appeared in Gangnam Beauty, My Strange Hero, Vincenzo, and Big Mouth, moving between warm, comedic, conflicted, and darker character work. In 2024, his role as Hong Soo Cheol in tvN’s hit drama Queen of Tears brought another wave of attention, especially as the character developed from an immature heir into a more vulnerable and emotionally grounded figure.
For Korean male celebrities, enlistment often arrives at a complicated point: just as public recognition is expanding, schedules must be reorganized around a legally required absence. Kwak’s case fits that pattern. His recent work has kept him visible, but the August 25 enlistment means fans are now looking at a defined window before he steps away from active entertainment work.
The announcement also underscores how enlistments are increasingly managed in an era of global fandom. A quiet entrance, no public ceremony, and limited site activity are practical choices, especially for actors whose audiences include viewers following news from overseas. For Kwak Dong Yeon, the next phase will shift away from premieres and filming schedules toward active-duty service, with his return to the screen likely to become a point of interest as February 2028 approaches.
