‘Flex x Cop 2’ Opens With Department Store Bomb Crisis as Ahn Bo Hyun Returns

‘Flex x Cop 2’ begins with its lead detective facing a crisis that leaves little room for a gentle reintroduction. The new season brings Ahn Bo Hyun back as Jin Yi Soo, the wealthy heir whose sharp instincts and unusual resources have made him an unconventional figure in the police force. Its opening episode sends him into a department-store emergency that turns a routine response into a life-or-death test.
Jin Yi Soo is once again working alongside Violent Crimes Unit 1 colleagues Park Joon Young and Choi Kyung Jin, played by Kang Sang Jun and Kim Shin Bi. The trio arrives at Hansoo Department Store after an anonymous tip points to a possible threat. What follows is a case built around a suspicious object, an improvised explosive device, and the danger of one wrong move.
An immediate high-stakes case
The season premiere places Jin Yi Soo in the center of the emergency when he approaches the device himself. After making contact, he is unable to simply step away: the situation is framed as one in which releasing it could trigger an explosion in the crowded store. The premise gives the drama an urgent opening while putting the returning detective’s confidence and instincts under unusually direct pressure.
The setting also reflects the series’ interest in cases shaped by Jin Yi Soo’s distinctive background. A department store connected to his family places personal familiarity and public danger in the same space. Instead of treating his privilege as a decorative detail, the story again uses it as part of the terrain he must navigate while working an investigation.
The crisis introduces an important new force in the season. Jung Eun Chae joins the cast as Joo Hye Ra, a veteran detective who heads the National Police Agency’s counterterrorism team. Her arrival at the scene puts her face-to-face with Jin Yi Soo under conditions that make a quiet first meeting impossible.
A new partner with history
Joo Hye Ra is not a stranger to Jin Yi Soo. She was his demanding instructor at the police academy, adding a layer of history to their professional relationship before they begin working together. The new partnership pairs Jin Yi Soo’s impulsive, resourceful style with a counterterrorism specialist whose role carries a more tactical and disciplined perspective.
The cast’s early filming material suggests that the transition into the new lineup has been smooth. Ahn Bo Hyun described returning after nearly three years as a homecoming after reconnecting with the team at the script reading and on set. Jung Eun Chae, entering the series for the new season, spoke of the welcoming atmosphere and the strong teamwork around the production.
That sense of continuity extends to the returning detectives. Kang Sang Jun and Kim Shin Bi rejoin Ahn Bo Hyun’s character, preserving the familiar unit dynamic while the drama adds Joo Hye Ra to its investigative world. The combination gives the season room to develop both the established friendships within the squad and the friction or trust that may emerge from the new partnership.
What the second season is setting up
The series is positioning its cases as larger in scale and less conventional than a standard procedural. Jin Yi Soo’s identity as a chaebol detective remains central to that promise: his access, family connections, and personal environment can pull investigations into spaces that would not ordinarily be open to the police. The department-store incident provides an early example of how those elements can intersect.
At the same time, the premiere’s bomb scenario establishes a more immediate threat than a typical introductory case. It gives Joo Hye Ra a natural reason to enter the story and creates a defining challenge for Jin Yi Soo before the season’s broader run of investigations begins. The question is not only how the device will be handled, but how the two detectives will learn to operate together after their reunion.
‘Flex x Cop 2’ premieres on August 7 at 9:50 p.m. KST. With a returning lead, a newly introduced counterterrorism partner, and an opening case designed around public danger, the drama is starting its next chapter by testing its characters before the first episode has time to settle in.
