Jang Yoon-jung’s Mother Referred to Prosecutors in Investment Fraud Case
The mother of singer Jang Yoon-jung has been sent to prosecutors in custody on suspicion of investment fraud involving tens of millions of won.

The mother of trot singer Jang Yoon-jung has been referred to prosecutors in custody on suspicion of investment fraud, bringing a police investigation involving a high-profile entertainment family into a new legal stage.
Police in Seoul’s Songpa District said on July 21 that they had sent the case involving Jang’s mother, identified by the surname Yook, to the Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors’ Office on fraud allegations. The case centers on claims that Yook received tens of millions of won from an acquaintance under the premise of an investment, then failed to pay the promised returns.
The matter is now in prosecutors’ hands after police questioned Yook about the alleged circumstances of the transaction and the scale of the claimed damage. No court judgment has been announced, and the allegations remain subject to further review through South Korea’s criminal justice process.
Police Say Search Was Previously Suspended
The investigation had reportedly faced an unusual delay before the arrest. After receiving a complaint, police opened an inquiry but at one stage suspended the search because they were unable to confirm Yook’s whereabouts. Investigators were said to have had difficulty identifying her location because ordinary traces of daily activity, including mobile phone usage and credit card records, were not clearly available.
Police later resumed efforts to locate her and recently tracked her down. She was arrested last week, after which police requested a detention warrant. A court subsequently approved the warrant, allowing investigators to hold her while they continued examining the case.
The alleged fraud involves money handed over for what was described as an investment opportunity. The publicly known details remain limited, but the central accusation is that Yook accepted funds from a person she knew and did not provide the returns that had been promised. Police said they reviewed the circumstances of the alleged transaction and the amount of damage before forwarding the case to prosecutors.
Jang Yoon-jung’s Side Distances Singer From Case
Jang Yoon-jung’s representatives have maintained that the singer is not connected to the allegations against her mother. Following earlier reports of the complaint, her side stated that Jang had cut off contact with her mother and that the alleged conduct was unrelated to the singer. The same position was reiterated after news of the arrest and referral became public.
That distinction is significant because the case has drawn attention largely due to Jang’s public profile. Jang is one of South Korea’s best-known trot singers, and legal controversies involving family members of celebrities often create reputational pressure even when the celebrity is not accused of wrongdoing. In this case, the public statements from Jang’s side have emphasized separation between the singer and the alleged conduct under investigation.
The referral to prosecutors does not by itself determine guilt. In South Korea, police may send a case forward when they believe further prosecutorial review is warranted. Prosecutors can then examine the evidence, request additional investigation if needed, and decide whether to indict. The detention status also means authorities persuaded a court that custody was legally justified at this stage, but it is separate from a final determination on the fraud allegation.
Case Moves Into Prosecutorial Review
For now, the key unresolved questions are the precise amount of alleged damage, the nature of the investment proposal, and whether prosecutors will conclude that the evidence supports formal charges. Investigators have already looked into the alleged flow of money and the circumstances under which it was received, but prosecutors will make the next major decision in the case.
The story also arrives amid renewed public attention on financial disputes connected to entertainment figures and their families. Such cases often spread quickly because familiar names can overshadow the legal substance. The core issue in this matter, however, is narrow: whether the accused knowingly obtained investment money from an acquaintance and failed to fulfill the promised return in a way that meets the legal definition of fraud.
Until prosecutors announce their decision, the case remains an active legal matter. Jang Yoon-jung has not been accused in the reports reviewed for this article, and her side has stated that the allegations concern her mother alone. The next update is expected to come through prosecutorial action, whether that means indictment, further investigation, or another procedural decision.
