Ryu Jun Yeol, Jung Ho Yeon and Hong Kyung Lead Netflix Mystery Thriller Outback

Ryu Jun Yeol, Jung Ho Yeon, Hong Kyung, Won Ji An and Justin Min have been confirmed as the principal cast of Netflix’s upcoming mystery thriller Outback, a working title for a series that will unfold against an Australian backdrop. The ensemble brings together five performers whose characters are linked by a sudden death and the questions that emerge around it.

Adapted from the webtoon G’Day, the drama centers on Shi On, a young man who travels to Australia after learning that his older sister has died unexpectedly. His arrival in an unfamiliar city begins as a personal journey through grief, but the clues left behind by his sister soon point toward circumstances that do not appear straightforward.

As Shi On follows those traces, suspicion replaces certainty. The investigation pulls him deeper into the events surrounding his sister’s death and places several people in his path whose motives and connections are not immediately clear. The overseas setting adds distance from everything familiar to him, making each discovery part of both a criminal mystery and an intensely personal search for answers.

Five characters at the center of the case

Hong Kyung will play Shi On, the figure who drives the story forward. His character must reconstruct his sister’s final movements while deciding which people and pieces of information he can trust. The role positions Hong at the emotional center of the thriller, with Shi On’s family loss providing the urgency behind every step of the inquiry.

Ryu Jun Yeol takes the role of Min Hyuk, a mysterious man situated at the heart of the incident Shi On is trying to understand. The character’s central position suggests that his actions and knowledge will be crucial to the mystery, while the limited description leaves open whether he will function as an ally, an obstacle or something more ambiguous.

Jung Ho Yeon will portray Smiley, an unpredictable content creator and streamer who lives in Australia. Her profession gives her a public-facing identity, but her unpredictability introduces another uncertain element into Shi On’s search. The character also provides a direct connection to the local environment in which the investigation develops.

Won Ji An plays Shi Young, Shi On’s older sister. Although her death initiates the plot, the traces she leaves behind make her an active presence within the narrative. Each clue has the potential to reshape how Shi On understands her life in Australia and the people around her before she died.

Justin Min rounds out the announced lineup as Scott, a police officer of Korean heritage. His official role places him close to the practical investigation, while his background may offer a bridge between Shi On and the Australian setting. Together, the five characters form a network connected by loss, suspicion and incomplete information.

Creative team links D.P. and Weak Hero

Han Jun Hee, known for directing D.P. and creating the Weak Hero series, will serve as executive producer. Jeon Doo Kwan, who worked as an assistant director on D.P. 2, will direct the series. Their involvement brings members of an established creative circle into a story that combines character-driven tension with a widening mystery.

The screenplay will be written by Han Jun Hee together with Park Hyun Woo, a writer on Weak Hero Class 2. That collaboration places the series’ adaptation in the hands of creators already connected through projects built around pressure, conflict and young characters confronting difficult systems.

Release date remains under wraps

Netflix has not yet announced when Outback will be released. The cast confirmation nevertheless establishes the main dramatic structure: Shi On’s pursuit of the truth, Min Hyuk’s position at the center of the case, Smiley’s unpredictable presence, Scott’s connection to law enforcement and Shi Young’s lingering influence through the evidence she leaves behind.

With its webtoon foundation, overseas location and ensemble of interlocking characters, Outback is being positioned as a mystery led by both plot and personal stakes. Further details about production and the release schedule are expected at a later date, but the newly confirmed cast now gives the project a clear set of faces for its central investigation.
