AKMU’s Lee Suhyun to Remake Seiko Matsuda Classic Blue Lagoon

AKMU vocalist Lee Suhyun will release a remake of Seiko Matsuda’s 1980 J-pop hit “Blue Lagoon” on August 18 at 6 p.m. Korean time. The new recording places Suhyun’s voice at the center of a song that has remained familiar to listeners across generations in Japan and Korea.

The track is the third release in a J-pop remake project planned by singer and television personality Kangnam. It follows remakes performed by Taeyeon and singer-songwriter Hanroro, extending a series built around contemporary Korean artists interpreting well-known Japanese songs. The sequence has paired each vocalist with a separate composition rather than following one musical era or style, giving the project room to move across decades while keeping its focus on individual interpretation.

A 1980 summer-pop standard

“Blue Lagoon,” whose Japanese title is “Aoi Sangoshou,” was released by Matsuda in 1980. Its bright melody and lyrics about the excitement of young love helped make it one of the singer’s signature early songs and a lasting example of Japanese summer pop.

The song also developed an audience in Korea before Japanese popular music was formally and widely distributed there. Informal circulation introduced it to Korean listeners, allowing the melody and Matsuda’s performance to become recognizable beyond the conditions of its original release.

Its cross-border profile received another major boost in June 2024, when NewJeans member Hanni performed the song at a Tokyo Dome fan meeting. That stage drew attention in both South Korea and Japan and introduced the 1980 release to younger K-pop audiences through a contemporary live performance.

Lee Suhyun’s vocal approach

The production company describes Suhyun’s version as combining her clear, warm vocal tone with the original’s refreshing atmosphere. The arrangement is intended to preserve the song’s summery sense of excitement while giving it an interpretation shaped by her own emotional delivery.

Suhyun is known as one half of the sibling duo AKMU alongside Lee Chanhyuk. Her voice has often been associated with precise phrasing and a clean tone that can move between playful pop, acoustic material and more reflective ballads.

That range makes “Blue Lagoon” a natural test of balance. A remake must remain recognizable to listeners who know the original, but it also needs a distinct performance identity. The announced concept suggests that the production will emphasize Suhyun’s vocal color rather than dramatically transforming the song’s central summer mood.

The third chapter of a remake series

The project began with Taeyeon’s rendition of “Bansanka,” followed by Hanroro’s reinterpretation of “A Cruel Angel’s Thesis.” Those choices moved between different corners of Japanese popular music, and Suhyun’s selection adds an earlier idol-pop classic to the series.

Using different Korean vocalists for each release gives the project an anthology structure rather than presenting it as one artist’s cover album. Each singer is matched with an existing composition, allowing the series to explore how voice, language and production can alter the feel of familiar material.

The announced information does not yet specify whether Suhyun’s recording will retain the Japanese lyrics, use a Korean adaptation or combine languages. It also does not detail the full production credits, music video plans or the number of future entries in the remake project.

Those unanswered details will become clearer when the track and its official credits arrive. For now, the confirmed release establishes a direct meeting between a Korean vocalist known for warmth and clarity and a Japanese pop song closely associated with youth, summer and melodic immediacy.

Suhyun’s “Blue Lagoon” will be available on August 18 at 6 p.m. KST. The release gives a 46-year-old song another contemporary interpretation while continuing a remake series that connects influential Japanese compositions with distinct voices from Korea’s current music scene.
