A former trainee has been referred to prosecutors after a dispute over an abrupt departure from a K-pop group’s pre-debut lineup.

A Japanese trainee who was preparing to debut in a new K-pop group has been referred to prosecutors in South Korea following a dispute with a former agency over his sudden departure from the lineup. The case centers on allegations of fraud tied to the trainee’s contract and the costs the company says it incurred during the group’s preparation period.
Police in Seoul’s Yeongdeungpo district reportedly sent the case to prosecutors without detention on July 29. The former trainee, identified only by an initial, was reportedly part of a planned six-member act at a smaller entertainment company before leaving shortly before the group’s intended launch.
A Departure Near the Finish Line
The agency’s account places the departure in December 2025, when the group was already well into its rollout. It says the trainee stopped communicating with the company and cited a breakdown of trust. By that point, preparations had reportedly progressed as far as music-video filming, making the change especially difficult to absorb in a project built around a fixed team.
The group ultimately went ahead as a five-member act and made its debut in February 2026. That outcome avoided a total cancellation, but a last-minute lineup change can still alter choreography, vocal arrangements, visual concepts, schedules, and the practical work of introducing a new team to the public.
The company has said it suffered roughly ₩57.4 million KRW in losses, an amount reported to include training, music and choreography production, recording, video work, meals, and accommodation. Those claims have not been established in court, and the referral to prosecutors is a procedural step rather than a finding of guilt.
Questions Around Contracts and Trust
At the center of the complaint is the agency’s allegation that the trainee had signed another agreement with a different entertainment company while still under contract. It has also claimed that there were circumstances suggesting a similar break with an earlier company. Those allegations form the basis of the reported fraud suspicion now under review.
Cases involving trainees are often complicated because the period before debut is both commercially uncertain and intensely structured. Companies may spend months or years investing in lessons, housing, creative development, styling, and promotional plans, while trainees navigate demanding schedules and uncertain prospects. A disagreement over whether a relationship can continue may involve contractual questions, personal trust, and competing accounts of what happened behind the scenes.
For a new group, the timing of a departure can matter as much as the departure itself. When a member leaves after recordings or visual content have been completed, the remaining team may need to revise material under pressure. The challenge is not limited to finances: a lineup’s chemistry, distribution of parts, and debut narrative can all need to be rebuilt.
What the Referral Means
The decision to forward the case means prosecutors will assess the available material and decide whether to pursue charges, seek further investigation, or take another course. The former trainee has not been convicted, and the legal process will determine whether the agency’s claims meet the standard required for any criminal case.
Reports also said police imposed a travel restriction during the investigation and that the former trainee is believed to remain in South Korea. No public details about his current activities or a response from his side were included in the account of the referral.
The case highlights the pressure surrounding the final stretch before an idol debut. A group’s arrival is often presented as a polished moment, but it depends on a large network of contracts, creative work, logistics, and personal commitments. As the matter moves to prosecutors, its outcome may clarify how the disputed departure is viewed under the law while the five-member group continues its own path after debut.
