Cha Eun Woo Seeks Tax Adjudication After Paying Assessment
Cha Eun Woo has begun a tax-adjudication process after previously paying the assessment tied to a tax controversy.

Cha Eun Woo has initiated a tax-adjudication process connected to an additional tax assessment that he paid earlier this year. The move opens a formal route for a legal review of the assessment while the ASTRO member continues his mandatory military service.
The case has drawn renewed attention because the payment had appeared to settle the immediate financial issue. His agency, Fantagio, said the new filing was made to obtain a legal ruling, adding that it could not provide detailed information while proceedings remain underway. The development does not erase the payment or announce a new verdict. Instead, it places the assessment within a separate review process whose result has yet to be determined.
From assessment to payment
The matter became public after it was reported that Cha Eun Woo had been investigated in relation to suspected tax evasion and received an additional assessment from South Korea’s National Tax Service. Early reports placed the assessment above 20 billion won, although the final amount later paid was reported at about 13 billion won.
In April, Cha Eun Woo said he had paid the full amount stated in the final notice. He also issued an apology over the controversy, saying he respected the tax authority’s procedures and findings and would comply with any remaining steps. That payment did not, however, prevent the possibility of a later challenge through the available legal process. The difference between figures reported at different stages is also significant context: an initial assessment can be followed by notices and procedures that establish the amount ultimately paid.
An appeal after payment can reflect a request to examine how an assessment was reached, rather than a reversal of the payment itself. The exact arguments in Cha Eun Woo’s filing have not been disclosed, and no public conclusion has been reached. For that reason, the case remains a pending administrative and legal matter rather than a final determination. The available information does not indicate a hearing date, the scope of documentation to be reviewed, or when a decision could be announced.
What Fantagio has confirmed
Fantagio confirmed that Cha Eun Woo filed a request for tax adjudication seeking cancellation of the assessment. The agency described the filing as an effort to receive a legal judgment and asked for understanding because the process is ongoing. It did not outline a timetable for a decision or identify the specific issues that will be considered.
Tax adjudication is a formal mechanism through which a taxpayer can contest an assessment and seek a decision on the dispute. The filing means the assessment will be reviewed within that process, but it does not by itself establish the final outcome. Any ruling could clarify the legal basis for the assessment and the treatment of the amount already paid. As with other unresolved legal matters, the status of the filing should not be confused with a finding in favor of either side.
Cha Eun Woo is currently completing his military service, while Fantagio continues to handle public communications related to the matter. The agency’s brief statement keeps the focus on procedure: the request has been filed, the review is active, and further details are not being shared at this stage.
A case still awaiting resolution
For fans and industry observers, the latest development marks a shift from the earlier payment announcement to a longer legal review. The public record currently confirms the payment and the subsequent request for adjudication, but leaves the underlying arguments and evidence undisclosed.
Until the process concludes, the most important distinction is between the filed appeal and a final ruling. Cha Eun Woo’s request puts the assessment before a legal review body; it does not yet decide whether the assessment will stand, be changed, or be cancelled. Further updates will depend on the progress and outcome of that review, and should provide clearer information about the legal position of both the performer and the tax authority.
