Police Clear Kim Soo Hyun In Kim Sae Ron Underage Dating Complaint
South Korean police have decided not to forward child welfare and false accusation allegations against Kim Soo Hyun, citing insufficient evidence.

South Korean police have cleared actor Kim Soo Hyun of allegations connected to claims that he dated the late actress Kim Sae Ron while she was a minor, closing a closely watched complaint that had drawn heavy public attention across the entertainment industry.
The Seoul Seongdong Police Station decided on July 29 not to forward the case to prosecutors, citing insufficient evidence. The decision covered allegations under the Child Welfare Act as well as a related false accusation claim. In South Korea, a non-transfer decision means police have concluded that the evidence gathered during the investigation does not support sending the case for prosecution.
The complaint was filed by Kim Sae Ron’s bereaved family in May 2025. The family alleged that Kim Soo Hyun had been in a relationship with the actress beginning when she was still underage. The claim became one of the most sensitive Korean entertainment controversies of the past year because it involved a deceased actress, an internationally known actor, and questions about the authenticity of material circulated during the dispute.
Police Cite Lack Of Objective Evidence
Investigators reviewed the allegations, related public claims, and available materials before deciding that the case should not move forward. The police judgment centered on the absence of objective evidence strong enough to prove the accusations. Reports on the decision said investigators also considered questions surrounding a recording that had been presented as part of the family’s claims.
During a press conference connected to the complaint, the family side had disclosed audio said to involve Kim Sae Ron speaking with an acquaintance before her death. The content was presented as supporting the claim that a relationship began when she was young. Kim Soo Hyun’s side disputed the file, arguing that the recording had been fabricated with artificial intelligence.
Police were reported to have found circumstances that raised suspicion about manipulation of the recording. Investigators also reviewed the results of forensic analysis of Kim Sae Ron’s mobile phone and other surrounding circumstances. Taken together, the evidence was judged insufficient to substantiate the complaint.
Actor Maintains Relationship Began After Adulthood
Kim Soo Hyun has acknowledged that he and Kim Sae Ron were in a relationship, but he has denied that it began when she was a minor. His side has maintained that the relationship took place after she became an adult, describing the period as running from the summer of 2019 to the fall of 2020.
The controversy initially intensified after online claims alleged that Kim Sae Ron and Kim Soo Hyun had dated for several years starting when she was 15. Those claims quickly moved beyond celebrity rumor because they were tied to legal accusations, family statements, agency rebuttals, and public questions about documentary evidence.
Kim Soo Hyun later took legal action against people who raised or circulated the allegations, including claims of defamation through false information. The family side then pursued its own complaint, alleging violations of child welfare law and false accusation. The latest police decision addresses that complaint by finding that the evidence did not meet the threshold for forwarding the case.
Case Leaves A Broader Industry Impact
The decision does not erase the public debate that surrounded the matter, but it marks a major legal development for Kim Soo Hyun. The actor’s career and public image had been affected by the controversy, which sparked intense scrutiny of his past relationship, his agency’s statements, and the way allegations spread through entertainment media and online platforms.
For the Korean entertainment industry, the case also highlights the growing role of digital evidence in celebrity disputes. Recordings, screenshots, social media claims, and allegations of AI manipulation can now become central to both public opinion and legal review. In this case, the police decision suggests that questions about authenticity and corroboration were decisive.
Kim Sae Ron, who began her career as a child actress and later appeared in major film and television projects, died in February 2025. Public discussion of the case has remained emotionally charged because it involves her family, her private life, and unresolved grief among fans who followed her career.
With the police choosing not to forward the complaint, Kim Soo Hyun has cleared a significant legal hurdle. Further legal disputes connected to defamation or related claims may continue separately, but the child welfare complaint itself has now been closed at the police stage due to insufficient evidence.
